Thursday, June 7 marks the beginning of the five-day Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. The first party, being held at the powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stax Records with Large Professor spinning the label’s classic material all night long.
Stax has been a major influence in shaping the progression of the southern and especially Memphis soul sound. Booker T and the MGs, The Dramatics, The Staple Signers, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and Shirley Brown have all helped build the history of Stax.
Large Professor also sampled Melvin Van Peebles’ now-famous “Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song," which is a Stax record, for Main Source's "Live At The Barbecue."
