Teen who sought hit man to kill dad gets 6 years
SOUTHGATE -- A teenager who tried to hire a hit man to murder her father because she was tired of arguing with him could spend the next six years in prison.
Candice Mays avoided a life sentence by pleading guilty July 17 to one count of solicitation of murder. In exchange Mays, 18, was sentenced today to 27 months to 72 months, with credit for 352 days.
Mays, who appeared before 3rd Circuit Judge Helen Brown in a white T-shirt and black jogging pants, said nothing before she was sentenced.
"Such a good offer was made so my client accepted," said defense attorney, David Cripps. "And this was also to spare the family any more emotional trauma by going through hearings and trials."
Last August, Mays was arrested for trying to hire an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent who posed as a phony hit man to kill her father. She offered to trade a pair of diamond earrings as a down payment for her father's life.
Authorities said during testimony that the teenager was tired of fighting with family members.
A small group of family and friends gathered at the sentencing, but didn't make any statements before the judge.
